Chile selects NASAMS for air defence, AMERICAS, THE

The Chilean Air Force (Fuerza Aérea de Chile [FACh]) has selected the Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), manufactured by Norway's Kongsberg Defence in co-operation with US-based Raytheon, as its new medium-range air-defence system.

Sources in Santiago told Jane's the decision came in late May and concludes an extended assessment and selection process that saw the Kongsberg/Raytheon system beat competitors including the Rafael-Israel Aerospace Industries SPYDER (Surface-launched Python and Derby) system. It will be used to protect the country's two air force bases as well as the army's armoured, mobile-reinforced brigades.
