Production of the Canadian Aerospace ADATS surface-to-air missile(SAM) has restarted after its selection by the Royal Thai Air Force(JDW 29 January) over the competing Euromissile Roland andThomson-CSF Crotale NG.No details of the value or quantity of the systems have beendisclosed, although the contract is understood to be for 10 to 20shelter-based units (above) for defence of key RTAF bases.``This is the first sale of a low-level air defence missile system infive years, either by us or by any competitor and a breakthrough intoan important territorial market,'' according to contractors OerlikonAerospace. Logistics and operational training are included in thecontract.The shelter version of ADATS has no surveillance radar and the RoyalThai Air Force will integrate its existing SkyGuard fire controlradar with the system. These radars currently control German-suppliedtwin 30 mm light anti-aircraft guns.Oerlikon Aerospace of Canada is also marketing ADATs into Turkey,Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The company has upgraded the first batch of18 systems for the Canadian Armed Forces to the same configuration asthe later batch of 18 delivered several years ago. All CanadianADATS, which are based on the M113A2 APC chassis, now have a C3system integrating multiple ADATS units into a network capable ofmultiple sequential firings against air and ground targets.Oerlikon Aerospace has also been awarded a contract for the WeaponSystem Support Management programme for Canada's ADATS. Under theterms of this contract the company will carry out engineeringchanges, modifications and updates to ADATS as well as conductingsoftware support, follow-up logistics support, repair and overallservices.
