Raytheon AN/AAQ-29 imaging system (United States), Airborne systems - Observation and surveillance - Sensor turrets
Type
Sensor turret.
Development
An evolution of Raytheon's range of Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) turret systems from the AN/AAQ-16 and AN/AAQ-27 (see separate entries), the AN/AAQ-29 is a 'Q-27' with a triple field-of-view and began life as the AN/AAQ-27 (3 FOV). It is intended to support a wide variety of helicopter missions, including low-level navigation and high-altitude long-range surveillance and targeting. Both the AN/AAQ-29 and AN/AAQ-27 are compatible with existing AN/AAQ-16 helicopter mountings and are easily interchangeable in upgrade programmes. In 2000, the US House of Representatives noted that only 42 of the 165 US Marine Corps (USMC) CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters were equipped with FLIR systems and recommended procurement of the AN/AAQ-29 FLIR. In September 2005, Raytheon received a USD38.8 million indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity from the US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) to deliver 83 AN/AAQ-29 FLIR kits and software under the Helicopter Night Vision System (HNVS) programme to retrofit to USMC CH-53E helicopters.
