Development
The US Army and Raytheon Missile Systems have developed and deployed a mobile, ground-based variant of the Phalanx (Mk 15) Block 1B (Mod 29) 20 mm Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) for Counter-Rockets, Artillery and Mortars (C-RAM) defence. The Phalanx (now known as the Centurion system) was first tested for possible Land-based Phalanx Weapon System (LPWS) missions in November 2004 and successfully proved its ability to provide unparalleled land-based protection. As of June 2006, at least two systems had been deployed to Iraq and were operational at Camp Anaconda near Balad. The system was selected as a near-term solution in response to an operational submission to provide theatre forces with protection against rocket, artillery and mortar attacks in a counter-insurgency operational environment, in particular the forward operating basis.Initial testing of this land-based variant was reported to have been conducted during the latter part of 2004 and early 2005 at the Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, against 60 mm, 81 mm and 120 mm mortar bombs at low and high elevations. Following the successful pre-action qualification trials at Yuma, the first two LPWS systems arrived in Iraq in May 2005. The first battery using the new system has been augmented by USN personnel familiar with the Phalanx.Continuing upgrades to the Phalanx system are ongoing; in late June 2006, the Raytheon Company from Tucson, Arizona, were awarded a continuance contract for Phalanx close-in weapons system and associated spares. It is not known if the modifications in this contract will effect those systems deployed in
