Description
The US Marine Corps DWTS is the principal communications system used by operational formations to communicate between ships and ship-shore. It is made up of four main elements - ITT unit level circuit switches (the 150-line AN/TTC-42 and the 30-line SB-3865), a basic radio system with the Raytheon/Unisys AN/TRC-170 as its nucleus, the digital distribution system and the AN/MRC-142 LOS UHF radio relay.
Description
AN/MRC-142(A) The Marine Corps was originally scheduled to receive 134 AN/TRC-170s under contracts awarded in January 1990. Deliveries of the AN/MRC-142 (subsequently given the A suffix) were then due to start in July 1991. Loral TerraCom (now part of L-3 Communications) was awarded a USD11.1 million contract for 34 AN/MRC-142s in January 1990. At that time the expectation was that up to 500 sets would ultimately be required. The MRC-142, designated SC190 by Loral, is a specially adapted version of the Tadiran GRC-400 mobile digital radio relay system and is normally installed in the back of a HMMWV. Although Loral had full design and production rights, it acted as system integrator for the Marine Corps contract and has retained Tadiran as a subcontractor. Tadiran reports that over 1,000 GRC-408 radios were integrated in the DWTS project. Subsequently, the Canadian Marconi Company provided the Band 3 radio subsystem portion of the DWTS for installation on board ship. This consists of an upgraded version of the AN/GRC-226 tactical radio.
