SIACCON Automated Command and Control System (Italy), Data and text

Development
SIACCON V1, which was UNIX-based, was introduced in the early 1990s. The Windows NT version of MACCIS, which is SIACCON V1AW, was introduced into the Italian Army in 2000. This was then upgraded to Windows 2000 in 2002.SIACCON 2, which is currently still under test, extends the functionality and includes NBC and EW. This development also includes SIACCON MLO (Minori Livelli Ordinativi), which will extend the system to platoon level using common core software.

Description
SIACCON (Sistema Automatizzato di Commando e Controllo) is a COTS-based distributed C2 system that provides battle management support across a wide range of functions in the Italian Army. It is based on the Marconi Automated CCIS (MACCIS), versions of which are in use in several countries, and uses a range of military and civilian standards. The system is scalable both in hardware and software terms, enabling its use at all levels from company to corps. The core system remains the same at all levels, but higher headquarters have a more comprehensive range of operational functions. A typical Command Post (CP) configuration consists of a fusion centre and one or more CP cells. The fusion centre contains a database server or servers to store all the operational data managed by SIACCON; a server or servers to provide generic services such as Mail, Web, DHCP and DNS services; and telecommunication and encryption devices. C2 workstations are located in the CP cells. Each CP has a LAN, and these are connected via tactical communications links. The system uses the LC2IEDM common data model for database replication, enabling interoperability with other systems. It accepts NATO formatted messages.SIACCON provides a common operational picture to all users, with live locational information provided via GPS. The system provides functional support across the full range of staff branches and also includes specific functionality to support Operations Other Than War (OOTW).General purpose capabilities include:digital mapping - vector and raster mapping, navigational functions, terrain analysis, 3-D viewformal message handlinginter/intranetmultimedia managementco-operative
