Type
Short range Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) grenade-launching system.
Development
To counter increasing submarine incursions into their territorial waters, the Swedish Navy sought a new, dedicated weapon system, which would be capable of forcing a submarine to the surface without destroying it. The result, developed in the early 1980s by Saab Bofors Dynamics (later Saab Bofors Underwater Systems and now Saab Underwater Systems), was Elma, which entered operational service in 1984. The system was later designated ASW 600 and has been succeeded by an improved system, the ASW 601. When either is used as part of an EW system it is designated EWS-900E. An improved version of ASW 601 was under development as Alecto but this programme was subsequently cancelled.
