The radar-equipped Harrier II Plus, the latest and most advancedmember of the Harrier family of aircraft, is in service with the USMarine Corps (USMC), the Spanish Navy and the Italian Navy.New-build production has been completed for all three customers, buta remanufacture programme for the USMC is continuing.Boeing's McDonnell Aircraft & Missile Systems business unit is leadcontractor for the Harrier II Plus programme, with British Aerospaceas its prime subcontractor, Rolls-Royce supplying the increasedthrust Pegasus 11-61 (F402-RR-408) engine, and Raytheon responsiblefor the APG-65 multi-mode radar. CASA and Alenia were respectiveindustry partners for local assembly in Spain and Italy, and bothnow provide in-country support and depot-level maintenance.Derived from the Night Attack version of the AV-8B, themulti-mission Harrier II Plus adds the AN/APG-65 radar, permittingadverse weather operations and conferring a beyond visual rangeair-to-air capability. Other improvements include improved pilotsituational awareness and enhanced self-defences. The programme todevelop and integrate the APG-65 aboard the Harrier II was launchedin September 1990 through a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) signed by Italy, Spain and the United States. A production MoUfollowed in December 1992.The USMC received 27 new build aircraft (bringing its total HarrierII procurement to 282) and is remanufacturing 72 day attack AV-8Bsto Harrier II Plus standard through to 2002. Under the remanufactureprogramme, a completely new fuselage is mated to the existing wing,empennage and landing gear, all of which are `zero-lifed' during theprocess.
