Type
S-band (2 to 4 GHz) electronically-scanned adaptive radar technology research demonstrator.
Description
ARTIST is a United Kingdom (UK) - United States (U.S) collaborative programme involving the construction of two demonstrators (one in the UK and one in the US) that were originally scheduled to be trialled side-by-side in the US during 2009. Of these, UK ARTIST builds on the MESAR 2 demonstrator and is designed to provide a 'world leading performance' in high-fidelity signal/waveform generation and signal processing, with a primary focus on addressing future performance requirements in the littoral. As such, UK ARTIST incorporates BAE Systems developed 'ultra-high' signal/waveform generation equipment, a variant of which has been procured by US contractor Lockheed Martin for incorporation into the US ARTIST architecture. In more detail, UK ARTIST incorporates Roke Manor Research-developed digital receivers and digital adaptive beamforming together with a QinetiQ-developed flexible, commercial-off-the-shelf digital signal processor that makes use of QinetiQ's Framework (SmartSensing{TM}) technology, baseline chains that are representative of current equipments and enhanced chains (co-developed by BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies and QinetiQ) that incorporate the 'latest' signal processing research. Again, the architecture's real-time adaptive radar control is based on that of the MESAR 2 with augmentation to reflect the new equipment's capabilities, while the MESAR 2's sensor integration and BMEC interface has been extended to include the BAE Systems' SARACEN combat management system (which (as of April 2008) had completed initial integration). UK ARTIST re-uses the MESAR 2's digitally sub-arrayed antenna (consisting of 1264 channels each of which provides 10 W in free space) and the system is designed to
