SUBEX (Canada), Associated underwater warfare systems - Transducers, hydrophones and pingers
Type
Acoustic noise augmenter.
Description
The SUBEX system has been designed to provide training for passive sonar operators in submarine detection, localisation and tracking techniques at actual submarine depths and speed, by imitating and augmenting the sound generated by submarines. The signal generated is used during naval training exercises to enhance or disguise the boat's radiated noise. The level and type of augmentation can be adjusted as the scenario requires. The standard SUBEX system comprises a Model 18SA0350 RSP housed within the sail of the submarine and a small, remote, lightweight display console which interfaces with an RSP controller. The RSP is a depth compensated, low-frequency, wide bandwidth acoustic source. The flexible mounting requirements of the standard SUBEX system enable it to be easily modified to fit most existing submarines with minimum intrusion in the main command centre area. An event recorder allows future recall of settings for comparison with other sensor information. Analogue inputs to the control unit allow the system to generate signals other than discrete tones. Lockouts on the main control unit ensure only authorised use of the system.
