Political background
The Congo-Océan Railway extends from the deepwater port of Pointe-Noire to Brazzaville. At Mont Belo it connects with the former Comilog Railway, over which it also operates services. Created in 2000 and wholly state-owned, CFCO is administered by the Ministry of Transport and Aviation. In April 2009 the Australia-based company DMC Mining Ltd reached agreement with the Congo-Brazzaville government to use the former Comilog Railway between Mayoko and Pointe-Noire (439 km) for the haulage of iron ore from deposits two km from Mayoko. DMC was to conduct further feasibility studies into the possible movement of 11 million tonnes net of ore per annum, requiring seven 108-wagon trains per day.
Passenger operations
In 2008 CFCO was operating around 360 passenger services annually, including stopping trains three times weekly between Pointe-Noire and Loutété and between Brazzaville and Loutété, and two fast trains weekly between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville.
